BLACKBERRY CURVE 8250 VS. NOKIA E72

January 20, 2010 By: syafique Category: All, Tech Toys

I was supposed to review the Blackberry Curve 8250 a while back, but as one thing led to another, I had forgotten and of course, I lost the Blackberry at KLCC the same day I made a comback on Twitter after a one-week hiatus. Here are some highlights based on my experience using the Blackberry Curve 8250.

  1. For an entry-level Blackberry, it is definitely great for students and young executives, who might eventually want to upgrade to the Storm or Bold series. It is very affordable. I bought mine at RM 1,200 without any packages as I am already a Maxis postpaid customer so all I had to do was upgrade my account with the Blackberry Internet Service.
  2. I love the BB Messenger as I can message friends for free, including those based in USA and elsewhere.
  3. Facebook and Twitter applications can be used at the touch of a button with ‘live’ updates.
  4. The annoying thing is that the BB will notify me of every single new emails that I get, especially during days when I do not even want to read my emails.
  5. It’s a 2G phone, not 3G!
  6. There is no front camera, so no video calls (if you want to make video calls!)
  7. It does not support Qik (www.qik.com).
  8. You can use Gtalk but make sure you sign-out from it if you are using web-based Gtalk at the same time, otherwise you will be receiving the same messages twice.
  9. The keypad is ideal for those with small fingers.
  10. I LOVE the voice command feature!

A week after losing the phone, I initially wanted to get another Blackberry but was told that I had to wait for a month. With that in mind, I bought Nokia E72.

  1. After using it for more than a week, I realize that Nokia E72 is suitable for those in their late 20s or 30s.
  2. Why? Because it has a very business-like feel. It’s a very “serious” phone compare to Blackberry Curve 8250. The BB is more fun and playful.
  3. I can still chat on Yahoo! Messenger, Windows Live Messenger and Gtalk thanks to Ovi Plus
  4. Just like the BB, I can read my emails anytime. It will notify me of unread emails.
  5. It has a built-in 5.0 mpixel camera with flash, capturing good quality images.
  6. On the other hand, as expected, pictures from the front camera is not that good.
  7. Even though I use many of the applications, the battery remains strong. With a BB, by the time you use Facebook and Twitter for a long time, you will see the battery meter dropping.
  8. Sleek design.
  9. It can read your SMS for you so you can listen to your new SMSes while driving! :)
  10. The speed dial for the Nokia E72 is digit-based whereas for the BB, it is letter-based, which is more convenient.

The BB curve 8250 or Nokia E72? I love both in different ways. I love the Blackberry for it’s BB Messenger, Facebook and Twitter applications. I love the Nokia E72 because it is a very “professional” phone. At the end of the day, as long as I can check my emails and Facebook when I am bored waiting for a friend in a shopping mall, I’m fine. As long as I can cam-whore, I’m happy too.

Both phones are like your laptop on-the-go.

  9. Hi there, i am not a tech savvy. I couldnt really differentiate between 2g and 3g so much. i have just bought my 8250(without making any review survey) yesterday. And i was tricked by the seller on the 3g part. so if it is 2g what is the drawback?mind to explain?thank you

  10. @Dianben: Thanks for visiting my blog! I am not a tech-savvy person as well.

In terms of 2G vs 3G, this link might help you know the difference: http://www.ehow.com/about_5365446_vs-network.html

Generally, I am using a 3G BlackBerry now, and I find the transfer rates much faster compared to when I was using Blackberry Curve. Especially true when I am trying to send emails.

    Anyways, enjoy your BlackBerry! :)
